The Incredible Vanishing Data Storage Costs

Posted in Adorama Rentals by Nathan Lee Bush on March 9, 2011

Not to state the obvious, but let’s just take a moment to reflect on the awesomeness that is Moore’s Law and its ilk. Case in point: data storage costs. Boing Boing has reported on the astonishing vanishing cost of storage capacity since the onset of the digital revolution:

YEAR — Price of a Gigabyte

1981 — $300,000
1987 — $50,000
1990 — $10,000
1994 — $1000
1997 — $100
2000 — $10
2004 — $1
2010 — $0.10

And with ever increasing throughput speeds allowed by next generation I/O technologies like USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt in the new Macbook Pro, we can rejoice at the present possibilities available to us. And yet, with ever increasing file sizes, somehow it’s never enough 🙂
